The 2006 Colorado Springs sweater was proudly worn by U.S. athletes during the 2006 Torino Olympic Winter Games. A true collector's item, this is special Olympic edition of Colorado Springs sweater from Dale and will not be produced again. It features official Olympic Team USA insignia, and a cool story. Steamboat Springs is said to have been named by three French fur trappers traveling down the Yampa River in 1865. They heard a chug-chug sound like that of a paddlewheel steamer traveling toward the sound, they discovered it to be one of the areas numerous bubbling springs hence the name Steamboat Springs. In 1912 the arrival of the Norwegian by the name Carl Howelson changed Steamboat Springs forever. Howelson brought with him his love of skiing and taking advantage of the natural terrain and climate was soon giving ski jumping lessons to local youngsters. By 1914 he had organized the first Winter Carnival and jumping competition an event that is held to this day and was honored in 1917 by having the towns official ski slope Howelsen Hill named after him. The Steamboat sweater is an honor to this areas rich history, culture and magnificent scenery. The lines around the waist and on the shoulders are inspired from Ute Indian basket weaving and the large star shaped pattern on the chest is taken from a detail on an old quilt. The eight leaf between the main patterns ties bonds to the Norwegian heritage and culture. In the middle there are the bubbling springs which have given name to the area. In the pattern you can also picture the magnificent Steamboat scenery with its many snow-capped mountaintops the highest stretching over 10500 feet.
